Transcendental Happiness in the Thought of Ibn Sīnā and Ibn ‘Arabī

This article explores the concept of transcendental happiness in philosophies arguably two most important figures Islamic intellectual thought, Abū ‘Alī ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) and Muḥyī al-Dīn ‘Arabī 638/1240). The striking parallels between philosophy Ibn that is their agreement on Aristotelian principle as comprehension God, combined with emanationist cosmologies. Based Neoplatonist emanationism, especially it put forth by Plotinus, argue there a necessary emanation from God results existence universe. As corollaries divine emanative process, those endowed rationality seek to return reciprocal upward motion aims ‘reverse’ downward original descent. impetus for two-way process incorporating descent through longing ascent found humans love. Despite these points confluence, are others divergence. disagrees his predecessor absolute annihilation divine, while still maintaining self first step attainment happiness. Transcendental happiness, argues ‘Arabī, ultimately realization human potentiality become complete locus manifestation. carried out body whereas Sīnā, requires divestment materiality.
